CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
- Background of the problem
Keeping in the classroom was a important as a teaching. Teachers were allowed to use corporal punishment, and some used it often. Of course, students did not like it very much.
One of the main problems for every teacher,,esppecially those just starting their careers, is being able to keep peace and order in the class. We all have heard of well meaning new teachers who wanted to be very friendly withntheir students but encountered chaos when students paid no attention to them. When this problem occurs, the teacher ends up wasting class time silencing sttudents and calling for order, and sometimes does not realiza whatbwent wrong. Only afterward will that teacher realise he or she should have started by being strict with clearly defined rules and then later could have given students more indenpendence.
- The formulation of problem
Based on the background of the problem about keeping discipline in the classroom, I would like to formulate the problem :
- What is the definition of discipline ?
- How the student’s expectations about discipline ?
- How the student’s games and strategies ?
- What the method of keeping discipline in the class ?
- What is effective ways of addresing discipline problems should be used ?
- The purpose of problem
- To know about the definition of discipline
- To know about their own expectation of school and the people working there
- To know the games and strategies connected to learning
- To know about how the methods maintain discipline
- To know the effective ways of addressing discipline problem

CONTENT
KEEPING DISCIPLINE IN THE CLASSROOM
- Defining discipline
Conforming to rules, to supervisors order and the demands of the community or institution. Discipline it come from the latin word discipulus, which means student. Latin disciplin refers to the way of treating students.
“conscious discipline” that is obdience to rules and vaues that are un-questionably recognised by and individual or by society. At school, conscious discipline occurs where there are not big discrepancies between the system of values represented by teachers and students. Problem with discussion in the classroom usually start from this type of belief by the teacher. Teachers usually begin to have problems with discipline when they cant motivated students or keep their concentration and attention, or when they do not understant students reason for misbehaving.
- student’s expectations about discipline
Research done by Nash, based on their expectation and perceptions at school (cited in janowski 1995). The dimension are :
- keeps order vs cannot keep order
children think keeping discipline is a teacher’s basic duty, even more important than teaching. A teacher who is too soft arouses dislike, contempt, and disdain.
- Teaches vs. Doesn’t teach
To teach is to aducate and give assignments, not to amuse with stories and jokes. Teaching consist of giving facts and other concrete data, not simply expressing opinions
- Explains difficult concepts and vs does not explain well
It is the teacher who should make new and difficult material easier to understand. Incentives to do depent work can be perceived as not fulfilling a teacher’s duty.
- Interesting lessons vs boring lessons
Generally speaking, an interesting and enganging lessons provides learniers with new knowlegde and has a consistent plan without any unnecessary interruptions.
- Friendly vs unfriendly
Early games, the games often consist of showing off in front of other students and include joking, making comments against the teacher or to contradict the teacher orders, asking unnecessariy for the help and forming alliences with lakeminded classmates.
Long-term strategies, the strategies for controlling behaviour or disrupting order may not be used consinstenly. The strategy of rebellion because this one causes the biggest problems. Rellious student are often confused with good students who show their academic talents over their weaker classmates. Teacher must avoid open tests of strength and alliances, praise them often for even small successes, emphasis their best qualities and use ability for the good of the class.
- Methods of keeping discipline
the method maintain discipline
- Keeping students attention
- Provide a clear structure for the lesson
Seperate parts of the lesson with expression and make clear conclusion
- Do many short activities instead of afew long ones
Change the task and work required of the students can help concentration
- Use an unpredictable order when calling on students
Say the students name after asking the question, not before. Acoid exercises with ‘chain’ answering
- Establishing clear rules
- Grading scales and criteria
- Consequences of absences, tardiness and missed assignments
- Rewards for extra work
- Consequences for disruptive behaviour
- Addressing discipline problems
The effective ways of addressing discipline problems should be used , are:
- Nonverbal approach
The teacher can be making eye contact with disruptive student, standing near the students, making calming gestures, or all of these things simultaneously.
- Verbal approach
The teacher can lowering his or her voice, inserting the students name in in a statement, and calling on the students to answer a question or to repeat the answer of another student.
- Reacting to the disruptive behaviour
Teacher can make a short statement identifying the incorrect behaviour, a short expression of the wish for good behaviour or an announcement of a reward for good behaviour. In using the techniques , the teacher must remember : teacher can criticise a students behaviour but should not criticise the students and the criticsm should be constructive and polite
CHAPTER III
CLOSING
- CONCLUSION
On some occassion, all teachers have problems with keeping discipline. Some teachers have natural gift for arousing respect from their students, while the others must work very hard to get it. With or without this natural talent, a teacher has to learn a lot about sociology. Psychology, and pedagogy and also learn a lot from his or her experience with students.
The problem of keeping discipline in the classroom is too widespread and complex to provide an ideal solution for all circumtances in an article of this length.
- SUGGESTION
In my opinion , too title is said and written about this critical aspect of teaching. I hope that these ideas and suggestions will help teachers find practical soltions to discipline problems they encounter in their classroom.
